About the guide
For the walk
you don't know yet.
Street Smarts is a field guide to being a stranger in a city. Not a list of scare stories and not a self-defence course you will never finish: a short, practical set of rules you can read in the taxi, remember on the street, and run through again when you are somewhere new. It covers how to hold yourself, how to move, how to keep your phone and money where they belong, how to read a station, a corner, or a group of people before they read you, and what to do when something has already started.
It is written for travellers, new arrivals, students on a first term abroad, people who take the late train home, and anyone who has ever walked a little faster than they meant to. The drills put you inside ordinary situations and let you choose a move, then show you why one answer holds up and another falls apart. The checklists are the things worth running before you leave the room, before you get in a car, before you set off for a night out.
The guide is built and maintained by Street Smarts, an independent editorial project. The material is written and revised by hand, tested on real streets, and added to when readers send in what they saw. There is no algorithmic feed and no filler. You buy the guide once, it stays in your pocket, and it keeps being useful.
